Hookah Basics & Etiquette
The quiet rules that make you look like a regular - sharing, coals, tips, and good draw habits.
Hookah is social. Great etiquette is what keeps the room soft and the session generous - for your table and everyone within earshot. This guide is the fundamentals: how the ritual works, how to share without awkwardness, and how to smoke politely at Mage. For walk-in logistics and first-timer nerves, start with the First Hookah Visit guide.
Hookah basics for beginners
Flavored tobacco (shisha) is heated so you inhale through a water base and hose. At Mage, heat and coals are our job. Yours is simpler: draw gently, share fairly, and speak up the moment something tastes wrong.
- Draw, don’t rip. Slow pulls taste cleaner and treat your throat better.
- Give the bowl a minute. The first draws are still finding their temperature.
- Leave the coals to staff. Heat placement is craft - asking for a check beats DIY “fixing.”

Sharing a hookah
Pass when you’re done with a draw. Don’t blow into the hose. Rest the tip upright or covered - never face-down on the table like a discarded straw. If someone’s mid-story, wait a beat. The hose can wait. The punchline shouldn’t.
Tips, coals, and hose manners
- Don’t move hot coals or dump ash unless staff asks for a hand.
- Harsh or hot tip? Ask for a coal check. That’s normal service, not a complaint.
- Keep the volume lounge-level. Mage is sanctuary energy - not shout-over-a-DJ energy.
- Respect study booths and date-night corners. Shared space is part of the magic.
How to smoke hookah politely
